Muotkatunturi is a paradise for it: frozen rivers, tunturi hills and no traffic, only wilderness.

Snowmobile tours are our signature activity. From Muotka you ride out over untouched wilderness, with no other people, only wilderness. Every group is small, and a local guide leads the way and sets a secure pace, so first-time riders feel at ease and nature is respected.

What our guests say

The guide was fantastic, we learned so much about Sami history and nature, and the 2-hour tour was amazing while respecting the environment. We crossed a frozen lake and hiked through forests. The mountains, like giants, surrounded us—it was breathtaking! We highly recommend it.

Green northern lights over the forest, reflected in the still river

One of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights.

No midnight transfers, no city lights. At 69° north, on the edge of the Muotkatunturi wilderness and far from any town, the dark Arctic sky begins right at your cabin door. When the Northern Lights appear, simply step outside and look up. Here, your chances of seeing them are excellent!

  • A wilderness of dark sky

1,570 km² of protected fells around the village and almost no light pollution, so even a faint aurora shows, under a thousand stars.

  • Every other clear night

In Muotkan Ruoktu the aurora shows on about every other clear night from September to March. Stay three nights or more to enjoy it !

  • We watch the sky for you

We check the forecast every day and tell you when it clears and Northern Light activity is high. Wait in the hot tub, or ride deeper into the dark by sledge with a guide.

Traditional Sauna and Hot Nordic bath

After a day in the cold, warm up and unwind in a private sauna or riverside Hot Tub, reserved just for you beneath the starry sky.

Our hot tub sits on the bank of the Peltojoki. We are the only ones to offer a hot tub by the river: on a clear night, you watch the Northern Lights from the warm water.

Snowmobile safaris in Inari, Lapland

A snowmobile safari is the easiest way into the open wilderness in winter. Ours start at the village, on the edge of the 1,570 km² Muotkatunturi wilderness, and follow frozen lakes, rivers and gentle fells.

Choose two hours for a first taste, or the three-hour mini expedition to ride further and climb for wide views. Both run every day from December to April, at 9:30 and 13:30, in small groups with a local guide and a coffee or tea stop in the wild. Plan the rest of your days with our winter guide.

Do I need a driving licence?

Every driver needs a valid driving licence, teenagers too. Passengers do not, and two people share each snowmobile, so one drives and the other rides behind.

Is it for first-time riders?

Yes. Both tours are rated easy, the groups are small and the guide sets a calm pace, with stops to look around.

Can children come?

Yes, from 120 cm tall, riding behind an adult. Children aged 2–11 get 30 % off.

What should I wear?

Rent warm overalls and boots in the village, and tell us your sizes when you book. Under them, a wool or synthetic base layer, warm socks, a hat and mittens. The snowmobiles have heated seats and handles.

Is there a night tour for the Northern Lights?

Our snowmobile tours run by day. For the aurora, take the Northern Lights by wooden sledge ride at 21:00, in a sledge pulled by a quiet snowmobile.

Responsible travel

Small groups, local guides and respect for the wilderness and Sami culture, recognised by three sustainability labels.
